Payroll is becoming increasingly more complicated as the HMRC pass more of the administrative burden onto businesses. At the same time the HMRC are putting firms under more pressure to ensure that all payroll aspects are completed accurately within strict timescales. Errors can be met severe penalties and fines. HMRC themselves estimate that there may be as many as 400,000 organisations in the UK running inaccurate payrolls.
For most businesses, the cost of staff is its greatest expense, and calculating the payroll can be one of the most time consuming aspects of administration. Running a weekly or monthly payroll, even for very few staff involves calculation of gross pay, computation of income tax and national insurance and addition or deduction of any statutory or non-statutory pay elements in order to calculate net pay and issue payslips which are a legal requirement. On a monthly basis deductions must be paid over to the HMRC and at year end returns must be made for all active payrolls. This is a laborious, complicated and very time consuming for the unskilled, whilst staff who have been incorrectly paid are not happy staff! Streamlining this aspect of the business can be a sensible, cost-effective move.
